If You Havent Read These Short Stories, You Should
If You Havent Read These Short Stories, You Should Recently, the literary world has had good reason to become interested in short stories again. The Rogues anthology includes some great stories by George R.R. Martin, Neil Gaiman, Garth Nix and other literary greats meant to hold us over until Martin releases The Winds of Winter. This post wont harp on about those, because every blog on the face of the planet has tread that ground. The anthology is a reminder however, of short stories which have endured the test of time. These are some of the short stories that grab and dont let go, despite their age.The Swimmer, John Cheever (1968)The Swimmer is a masterclass in using language to convey a sensation, and an excellent introduction to surrealism. Though the initial events of the story are grounded in reality- a man in his prime taking it upon himself to journey home by swimming through all of the pools of his wealthy neighbors properties- it soon becomes a less literal experience. This work deals with class and social hierarchy, but tho se are the boring bits. The real meat is in Cheevers use of language to demonstrate the link between the primary ideas of his work. The concepts of alcoholism, swimming, wealth, and loss each blur into one another until it is unclear where one idea begins and the other ends. Read the swimmer slowly, and with an eye to the language used, and it wont disappoint. The concepts of alcoholism, swimming, wealth, and loss each blur into one another in Cheevers The Swimmer. Photo by Guduru Ajay bhargav from Pexels. The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1892)The Yellow Wallpaper is likewise, an introduction. This story is one of the earliest works of American feminist literature, and is written in the first person. This is a darker story, and can feel a bit stifling to read, but has been widely adapted to the stage. A performance often feels much more light-hearted than the brooding tone of the story, while conveying the deeper themes of the work undiluted. Suffice to say that this is an early discovery of feminist issues, written by a woman, from a womans perspective. It is especially concerned with the treatment of women by doctors, and by the men in their lives; and with the relationship between infants and their parents (both father and mother). A tense and sometimes horrifying narrative, The Yellow Wallpaper is worth the stress of reading it, and downright enjoyable on the stage. The Wendigo, Algernon Blackwood (1910)The Wendigo is a special type of horror which captures the sense and grandeur of the Canadian and American frontiers. Drawing inspiration from the myth of the Wendigo- a creature said to always feel hungry, and thus gorge itself unendingly- this story is slow to start, but offers a fully realized and captured sense of the loneliness and desolation of the wilderness, alongside the tensions which encourage belief in the supernatural. Readers who weather the introduction, and who appreciate the tension of the environment and the severe costs of dec isions in the wilderness, will be rewarded with a supernatural and surreal tale about what it means to be lost in the woods. This is a must-read for any Canadian or American who has found themselves beneath the snow-covered boughs of a forest in winter. The Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad (1899)The Heart of Darkness is a must-read, just as the movie it inspired- Apocalypse Now- might be considered a must-watch. The reason I suggest reading Joseph Conrad however, is not as a dry lesson in colonialism, but because like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Heart of Darkness is a tale about how the journey changes the destination. Joseph Conrads contribution to literature, and his tale of men set off down a river, is so iconic that it is impossible not to see the reflection of certain scenes in other works- The Life of Pi, for instance, borrows Conrads imagery of encountering a tiger; and the recent film The Lost City of Z likewise draws strongly on the narrative tropes of the journe y into the unknown genre. For this reason, Conrads work cannot be overlooked, despite recent scholarly assertions that its depictions of colonialism have not aged well. The Black Cat, Edgar Allan Poe (1843)The Black Cat, sticks out as one of the greatest uses of an unreliable narrator in fiction- that is, the character telling the story has reason to avoid telling the whole truth. This story is ostensibly horrific, but is the kind of horror which creates dread rather than fear or disgust. It is written from the perspective of a condemned man, of arguable sanity, and follows the chain of events leading up to that characters crime and subsequent sentence to hang. What makes this story worth reading is the vivid descriptions of the narrators actions, which lead a reader to believe in the validity of the actions, despite ample reason to doubt that characters claims. Couple this with the symbolism throughout the short story, and a dark conclusion, and The Black Cat stands out as a special type of brooding horror, perfect for reading by candlelight. Of course, Poe is famous for stories like this, and those who enjoy The Black Cat should also read The Purloined Letter. The Magic Shop, H. G. Wells (1903)Stories like The Magic Shop, are astounding in their quickness. A very light read, this story will remind Harry Potter fans of the room of requirement. It is also an example of a short story which creates a world in your mind, building the size, and shape, and occupants of the eponymous magic shop until they stick out vividly in your mind. This story captures the sense of wonder present in a child watching a display of magic, and twists it ever so slightly so that undercurrents of danger lurk. For the scholarly minded, the story paints an interesting picture of masculine parenthood in the late 1800s.The Gift of the Magi, O. Henry (1905)This story is a classic; and even if few remember its name, almost everyone has heard it told (and retold). The Gift of the Magi is impor tant because it demonstrates the inherent value in self-sacrifice, and because it is one of the few short stories that is neither horror, nor suspenseful; but which builds a narrative in the span of less than three pages, and delivers an ending which reveals a magnificent amount about both characters in the tale, and about love in general. Of the stories here, this is one of the shortest, and is also the most likely to be enjoyed by any reader, whether for the first time, or as it sparks their memory of having read it- or heard it told- in the past.Beyond the Door, Philip K. Dick (1954)Beyond the Door is an exercise in weirdness and will leave the reader unresolved. A departure from Philip K. Dicks normally light tone, and from his normally science-fiction works. This is the amusing, strange, and violent tale of a cuckoo clock and adultery. A very quick read, Beyond the Door is recommended here because it is hard to make heads or tails of, and it certainly tells a unique tale about marriage and how relationships can fall apart when viewed differently from each side. The Bet, Anton P. Chekhov (1889)The Bet is another, like Beyond the Door, which may leave readers unresolved. It is a short, short story discussing the virtues of morality and wealth, via the narrative device of a bet between two men regarding which is the greater punishment: death, or life imprisonment. Each character involved in the bet- a lawyer and a banker- are flawed, and so the outcome is ambiguous in some ways, but poses questions about what was sacrificed during the bet, and why each character lost gained wealth or morality by having made the bet. The bet itself is meaningful, rather than simply the outcome.Chekhovs The Bet is a short, short story discussing the virtues of morality and wealth. Photo by Thgusstavo Santana from Pexels.Araby, James Joyce (1914)Araby is perhaps another must-read piece, especially because it deals with the conflict between imagined or ideal circumstances, and re ality. It is interesting because of the way children, particularly the child whose point of view the story is written from, are described. Often, characters are light, or glowing, or otherwise magical. This attribute is given to children, despite the environment they are being raised in, which is grim. As the story progresses, the idea that children are ideal is tarnished, and the outcome of the story can be interpreted in a number of ways. We might conclude that a journey to the Araby bazaar is a journey into adulthood and that the change in the protagonists perspective is one created by a coming of age; or else we can view all of the romantic ideals at the outset of the story as simply a falsehood or faà §ade, which was never truly indicative of what the boy was experiencing. In either case, Araby will likely leave a hole in your heart, and make you think about who you were when you were young- and of course, that means you should read it.To concludeThe stories here are classics, but also powerful. Most of them are quite short, and great for a bite-sized piece of literary snack while we wait for George R. R. Martin to finish his next full-sized novel; or just so we remember some of the short stories which have helped shape the stories being told now. Its always good to know where stories come from, and how they change.

Definition and Examples of Lowercase Letters in English
Definition and Examples of Lowercase Letters in English In the printed alphabetà and orthography, the term lowercaseà (sometimes spelled as two words) refers to small letters (a,b,c . . .) as distinguished from capital letters (A,B,C . . . ). Also known asà minusculeà (from Latinà minusculus, rather small). The writing system of English (as in most Western languages) uses a dual alphabet orà bicameral scriptthat is, a combination of lowercase and uppercase letters. By convention, lowercase is generally used for the letters in all words except for the initial letter inà proper nounsà and in words that begin sentences. (For exceptions, see Names With Unusual Capitalization, below.) Origin and Evolution of Lowercase Letters Originally, lower case letters stood by themselves. Their forms derived from the penned Carolingian minuscule. The upper and lower case letters received their present form in the Renaissance. The serifs of the capitals, or upper case letters, were adapted to those of the lower case alphabet. The capitals are based on an incised or chiseled letter; the lower case characters are based on a pen-written calligraphic form. Now the two kinds of letters appear together. (Jan Tschichold, Treasury of Alphabets and Lettering. Norton, 1995)Upper and lower case? The term comes from the position of the loose metal or wooden letters laid in front of the traditional compositors hands before they were used to form a word- the commonly used ones on an accessible lower level, the capitals above them, waiting their turn. Even with this distinction, the compositor would still have to mind their ps and qs, so alike were they when each letter was dismantled from a block of type and then tossed back into t he compartments of a tray. (Simon Garfield, True to Type: How We Fell in Love With Our Letters. The Observer, October 17, 2010) Names With Unusual Capitalization Several coinages provide a new look to English spelling, especially with names. We have never seen anything before quite like the use of a lower-case initial for a brand-name, as in iPod, iPhone, iSense and eBay, or airline companies such as easyJet and jetBlue, and it is not yet clear how to handle them, especially when we want one of these words to begin a sentence. There are precedents for introducing a capital in the middle of a word (as in such names as McDonalds and chemical substances such as CaSi, calcium silicate), but brand names have hugely increased its everyday visibility, as seen in AltaVista, AskJeeves, PlayStation, YouTube and MasterCard. (David Crystal, Spell It Out. Picador, 2012)Brand names or names of companies that are spelled with a lowercase initial letter followed by a capital letter (eBay, iPod iPhone, etc.) need not be capitalized at the beginning of a sentence or heading, though some editors may prefer to reword. This departure from Chicagos former usage re cognizes not only the preferred usage of the owners of most such names but also the fact that such spellings are already capitalized (if on the second letter). Company or product names with additional, internal capitals (sometimes called midcaps) should likewise be left unchanged. (ââ¬â¹The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th ed.The University of Chicago Press, 2010)à à ââ¬â¹ Xerox or xerox? The dropping of the capital letter of the trademark is one piece of certain evidence that the trademark has indeed become generic...The OED [Oxford English Dictionary] lists XEROX both as capitalized, and in lower case, as well as a trademark and generic term: a proprietary name for photocopiers . . . also used loosely to denote any photocopy (20: 676). This definition points out clearly that xerox, either capitalized or in lower case, is used throughout the population as both a proper adjective and as a noun. (Shawn M. Clankie, Brand Name Use in Creative Writing: Genericide or Language Right? in Perspectives on Plagiarism and Intellectual Property in a Postmodern World, ed. Lise Buranen and Alice M. Roy. SUNY Press, 1999)A good rule to follow is that most trademarks are adjectives, not nouns or verbs. Use trademarks as modifiers as in Kleenex tissues or Xerox copiers. Similarly, trademarks are not verbsyou can copy on a Xerox machine, but you cannot xerox anything.(Jill B. Treadwell , Public Relations Writing. Sage, 2005) Pronunciation: lo-er-KAS Alternate Spellings: lower case, lower-case

It has nonetheless become a valuable and new form of communication that has effectively collapsed all physical and geo graphical barriers. There are many reasons given for its success, one of them is the simplicity of its architecture which can be summarised as being a network of networks. Clients can make request to a computer via several protocols such as TCP/IP, Domain Name Servers (DNS) are used to lookup URL requests and translate words into IP addresses. One of the key recent milestones in the internet has been the emergence of internet 2.0. The benefits of this have been exploited by developers and corporations and thus the explosion of apps such as Skype, video on demand, APIââ¬â¢s and interactive games have become one of the most common features of internet usage today. Other advantages include not having to refresh a whole page, page state can be maintained and inputted text is also saved (Campesato & Nilson 2010). All of these factors ensure a much smoother experience for the user. In this regard, the internet has become a more competitive marketing tool in the tourism and hospitality industry (Doolin et al. 2002). It has today become a common feature for travellers and tourists worldwide to rely on the power and capability of the internet powered by web 2.0 technologies to interact with businesses all over the world. They are able to gather information on prices, offers, packages, and destinations online or from the internet, conveniently, at least, at the comfort of their homes, offices, or even while on the move (Gaona et al. 2013). The latter is facilitated by the advanced in technology with regards to the capability of handheld devices including smartphones, laptops, and tablet computers (Greenspan 2004). Further, many hoteliers, and tour operators are regarding the internet/web as the new, cost-effective, and efficient distribution, marketing and customer care environment; thus most of them are taking advantage these e-services, specifically, online booking or reservation system. In order to facilitate the development of a system which can meets its goals a nd is also efficient, research suggests that the different elements of the system such as the interface code, server side scripting code and database code be separated. This is a common theory which industry has adopted because it allows people with different skills to develop a system simultaneously. This concept or is often termed N-tier architecture (Bââ¬â¢Far 2005) and will be incorporated into the project. Developing online booking systems has many advantages both for the client and the business that provides online

Homeland Security Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Homeland Security - Assignment Example The character of confrontation has been changing ever since the Vietnam War when in the face of overwhelming firepower of the US, the enemy resorted to guerrilla warfare using the support of local population as one of the main strategies to hit and run. This technique has by now metamorphosed into mindless violence, undertaken by persons indoctrinated to the point of committing suicide while carrying out terrorist strikes. Given the innumerable points around the world and the points of entry into the USA, it is almost impossible to have one hundred percent, foolproof systems to detect, restrain or destroy such persons in good time. Such being the enormity of the task, it calls for constant vigilance and ever improving systems and procedures. The security breach that occurred at the Newark International Airport on Sunday, January 3, 2010, brings home the harsh reality of the potential human and systems failure simultaneously (Wilson, FOXNews.com). Or, take the case of the Nigerian who managed to board the flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Eve. He evaded detection and almost succeeded in bombing the plane, using the explosives strapped inside his under-garments. It was only by luck that he was apprehended. Prior to the incident, he was on the suspect's list and his father had even warned the authorities of his radicalization; yet he managed to board the flight, confirming a failure of information sharing among the security agencies and airport security checking. That the price of freedom is eternal vigilance is once again proved by this episode.

Myne Owne Ground Essay -- American History Slavery
Myne Owne Ground Anthony Johnson was a black man who arrived in Virginia around 1621 and was purchased to work as a slave in the tobacco fields of the Bennett Plantation. At that time he was merely known as ââ¬Å"Antonio a Negroâ⬠, as it wasnââ¬â¢t common for black slaves to have last names. On March 22nd, 1622, an Indian attack on the Bennett plantation left only 12 surviving slaves, one of them being Anthony. In that same year a woman named Mary arrived at the plantation. Being that she was the only woman living at the Bennett plantation in 1625, Anthony could be considered fortunate to have received her as his wife. Together they had at least four children. It isnââ¬â¢t known how Anthony received his full name of Anthony Johnson, but the time that it is believed that this happened leaves some clues for speculation. It is presumed that someone named Johnson helped Anthony and his wife escape to freedom, apparently sometime between 1625 and 1650. In the 1640ââ¬â¢s it is belie ved that Anthony and his family owned a small farm in Northamton where they raised livestock, which was mostly des...

Duchampââ¬â¢s Nude Ladies, Sexual Organs And `Morbid` Double Aesthetic Standards
Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) was a French artist whose ideas and works had a phenomenal influence on modern art forms. Though Duchampââ¬â¢s work, ideas, and associations have been linked notably to Dadaism and also to Surrealism, his works could be considered to be very peculiar, and thus defies specific or typical categorisations. Art had a strong influence in Duchampââ¬â¢s upbringing. His maternal grandfather, Emile Nicolle, was a painter and engraver and Duchamp was exposed to his works from infancy. Two of his senior brothers were also artists ââ¬â Jacques Villon (1875-1963) who was a painter and a printmaker, and Raymond Duchamp-Villon (1876-1918), who was a sculptor. After schooling at the Lycee Corneille in Rouen, France, for seven years (aged 17), Duchamp decided to be an artist though he had showed impressive academic acumen in mathematics. Duchamp was influenced by various art movements. His early paintings while he schooled at Lycee Corneille were more aligned towards Post-Impressionism, Fauvism and Cubism. Some of these works were drawings and watercolour paintings that showed his sister, Suzanne, in different poses. The work of Odilon Redon, a symbolist painter, also influenced Duchamp during his early years of painting. Though Redonââ¬â¢s works were not overtly unacademic, they were quite individualistic. Between 1904 to 1905 when Duchamp was studying at the Academie Julian, he drew and sold humorous cartoons that combined visual and verbal puns to create effect. Also, his association with his eldest brotherââ¬â¢s (Jacques Villon) discussion group ââ¬â the Puteaux Group ââ¬â may have influenced the Cubist styles that featured in works like Coffee Mill (1911) and Portrait of Chess Players (1911). Read this ââ¬â Puns in the Importance The Cubic depictions of overlapping frames and the use of multiple perspective featured in these paintings of Duchamp. The first work of Duchamp that caused a major stir and controversy in the art world was his painting ââ¬â Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 (1912). It could be said to be the fist in a series of artworks that caused ââ¬Ëexplosiveââ¬â¢ sentiments about his works ââ¬â some of admiration and some of abhorrence. The painting depicted a mechanistic nude figure in motion. Cubic influences of fragmentation and synthesis featured prominently in this painting. Duchamp had first presented the painting for exhibition at the Cubist Salon des Independants in France but had to withdraw it, as he was not prepared to change the title of the painting as demanded by the jurists of the exhibition. The following year in 1913, the ââ¬ËNude Descending a Staircase, No. 2ââ¬â¢ was featured in the Armory Show in New York City where is caused much controversy and became the focus of the exhibition. The New York Herald described it as a ââ¬Å"cyclone in a shingle factoryâ⬠. (ââ¬Å"Encyclopedia Britannicaâ⬠, http://www. britannica. com/eb/topic-172862/Marcel-Duchamp) The ââ¬Ësuccessââ¬â¢ in New York precipitated more exhibitions and works there and it was in New York that he became associated with Dadaism. Dadaism as an art form or movement, sort to present a radical way of liberating the individual from the confines of logic and reason. Hence, ââ¬Å"Dada was spontaneous, contradictory and paradoxical; revolting against traditional social and artistic values. â⬠(ââ¬Å"Hsiu-Li Kuoâ⬠: 8) Duchamp himself, through his associations with Dadaism defined it as ââ¬Å"the nonconformist spirit which has existed in every century, every period since man is manâ⬠. (quoted in Dada and Surrealism, 11) In pushing the boundaries of art beyond orthodoxy, Duchamp invented ââ¬Ëready-made artââ¬â¢. This entailed the use or presentation of everyday objects as a designation of art. Materials like wood, cardboard, nails, wire, paper, etc, were put together or assembled into sculptures. A typical example is Duchampââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËDisturbed Balanceââ¬â¢. The level of unconventionalism depicted in Duchampââ¬â¢s work could be said to represent a ââ¬Ëmockeryââ¬â¢ of art. To Duchamp, the ââ¬Å"significance of art was revealed in the act of making it, and this act should be able to critically challenge the existing value system. ââ¬Å"Hsiu-Li Kuoâ⬠: 8) According to the Encyclopedia Britannica: ââ¬Å"His irreverence for conventional aesthetic standards led him to devise his famous ready-mades and heralded an artistic revolution. â⬠(http://www. britannica. com/eb/topic-172862/Marcel-Duchamp) Based on his invented ââ¬Ëready-made artââ¬â¢ Duchamp came up ââ¬Ë Bicycle Wheelââ¬â¢ in 1913. This ready-made art featured a bicycle wheel that had been mounted on a stool. In 1914, Duchamp produced another ready made art ââ¬â the ââ¬ËBottle Rackââ¬â¢ ââ¬â a signed bottle drying rack, and in 1915, he produced ââ¬ËPrelude to a Broken Armââ¬â¢. (ââ¬Å"Calvin Tomkinsâ⬠) Perhaps, the ready-made art that shocked the art world the most was ââ¬ËFountainââ¬â¢ produced in 1917. The ââ¬ËFountainââ¬â¢ was a urinal presented as an artwork, with a signed pseudonym, R. Mutt. (ââ¬Å"Calvin Tomkinsâ⬠) This work was rejected from being exhibited by the Society of Independent Artists causing Duchamp to resign from its board. The exhibition committee had held that the ââ¬ËFountainââ¬â¢ was not an art work hence their decision not to allow it to be exhibited. Evidently, Duchampââ¬â¢s concept of art kept causing uproars due to the unconventionalism that had been a notable with his work since the ââ¬ËNude Descending a Staircase, No. ââ¬â¢. However, the fact that He did not particularly associate himself with a particular art form even if he ââ¬Ëborrowedââ¬â¢ from it portrays the level of individualism that typified his work. Duchamp was for instance noted to detest the seriousness of the Cubists and thus abstained from contributi ng to theoretical discussions on Cubism in his brotherââ¬â¢s study group ââ¬â the Puteaux Group. (ââ¬Å"Calvin Tomkinsâ⬠) The lack of an overt ââ¬Ëseriousnessââ¬â¢ or reverence with which he approached art is perhaps summed up in his assertion about art ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m afraid Iââ¬â¢m an agnostic when it comes to art. I donââ¬â¢t believe in it with all the mystical trimmings. As a drug itââ¬â¢s probably very useful for many people, very sedative, but as a religion itââ¬â¢s not even as good as God. â⬠(Quoted in The World of Marcel Duchamp, 10) Duchampââ¬â¢s early association with cartooning and the use of visual and verbal puns could also be seen in works that he did in later life. This was perhaps most evident in his 1920s artistic collaborations with Man Ray. Working under the pseudonym Rrose Selavy, Duchamp posed in a series of photographs where he dressed as a woman. These photographs were taken by his collaborator, Man Ray. The pseudonym ââ¬â Rrose Selavy ââ¬â played on language to carry across an erotic message. Rrose Selavy sounded like Eros, c'est la vie in French which translated to English means Eros, such is life. After the 1920s, Duchamp became less interested in art in general and concentrated on chess though he was noted to be involved in staging of exhibitions with the Surrealists in the 1940s. In1942 for example, his exhibition at the First Papers of Surrealism show in New York, included a woven three dimensional web in a spaces within rooms. Duchampââ¬â¢s last artwork was ââ¬ËGiven: 1 The Waterfall, 2. The Illuminating Gasââ¬â¢. This artwork could only be viewed by peeping through a hole in a wooden door, and it depicted a naked woman lying on her back with her legs spread apart and her face covered. The woman holds a gas lamp in one hand with a landscape in the background. This work was done secretly and was its exhibition came as a surprise to the art world as Duchamp was thought to have retired. (ââ¬Å"Calvin Tomkinsâ⬠) It may be argued that this last work of Duchamp not only characterised him as one of the most famous modern artists, but also a daring one who pushed the philosophical and aesthetic boundaries of art beyond conventional orthodox conceptions.

Since The Creation Of The Internet Users Have Felt Some
Since the creation of the Internet users have felt some sense of privacy. This sense of privacy often happens since users are operating from the privacy of their home. However, this is far from the truth. Think of the Internet as a public space such as New York Times square. There is a large flow of people entering and leaving. If you were to be picked out of the crowd your personal data including name, address, relationship status, email address, and browsing history would all be available to the people who picked you. People often call this leaving a footprint on the internet. Why did concerns only start arising in the early 2000 s? The simple answer is that people were unaware and no one utilized personal data until then. The thingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Data collection is increasing as more and more users gain access to the internet, freely browsing without knowing their data is being collected. On October 27, 2016, the Federal Communications Commission adopts broadband co nsumer privacy rules. These new rules enable the consumer to decide how their data is used and shared by their broadband providers. Following these new rules on November 21, 2016, a panel debate the merits of the Federal Communications Commission online privacy rules. The debate is primarily between Doug Brake, who is pro-privacy, and Kevin Rupy, who is pro data collection. Brake agrees with Rupy that the economy is driven by the access to data and it would be detrimental if the FCC took that way. However, Brake says that there should be different levels of security depending on the sensitivity of the data. Brake compares a social security number to a person s name. These pieces of information should obviously be held at different security levels as social security is substantially more important than a person s name. Brake also argues the Federal Communications Commission did a poor job of balancing consumer privacy and innovation. Brake understands the benefits of giving up some p rivacy for innovation as it can lead to a better user experience. By having a data-driven economy, more and more companies are utilizing the internet. They turn to user data to use one-on-one advertisements.
